Yorda opens a gate with a mysterious energy connected to the castle. Ico must often figure out how to get Yorda to these gates so that the pair can progress.

Yorda is the the other main character in Ico, along with the game's namesake. She is described as a beautiful yet fragile girl whose skin is pale white, glowing faintly with a light of its own. Yorda is part of the castle, so her magic powers enable her to open magic doors. She is the daughter of the Queen and has been imprisoned for reasons that are uncertain until late in the game.

She appears to be quite innocent and behaves as though she has lived inside the cage for most of her short life. If left to her own devices the girl will sometimes wander away, more often than not chasing one of the white birds that populate the castle. Considering the vision Ico has upon falling out of his sarcophagus - as well as her transformation back to shadow when the castle falls - the veracity of the Queen's 'daughter' statement has to come under some scrutiny. Is she yet another creation of the Queen, daughter in nothing but name, created for the sole purpose of containing her 'mother's' essence upon the old woman's demise?

Yorda is no fool, unexperienced though she may be. In the PAL release she often tries to help Ico solve the puzzles that block the duo's path by running to clues, pointing, and occasionally even shouting the younger boy's name. Her inner strength becomes most obvious during the game's ending - the girl who previously did not contain the bodily muscle to even climb a chain, now reduced to spirit, gently picks up her unconscious friend and carries him to safety, pushing his boat out to sea while she herself stays behind in the crumbling castle. The protected has become the protector; it is a moving way to end this most moving of games.
