Those who pre-ordered Shadow of the Colossus in Japan received a special bonus DVD which included the Nico tech demo.

"Nico" was the development name for Shadow of the Colossus when work began on the game in 2002. The title is a combination of the words "ni" (Japanese for "two") and Ico. At the time, the game was intended to be a direct sequel to Ico; hence the project's name translated to either "Ico 2" or Next Ico. Director Fumito Ueda later stated that, during the development of the tech demo, it was simpler to reuse the character design of Ico's protagonist and that he never really intended on making a direct sequel to Ico.

[edit] The tech demo

Nico was first shown to the public at the 2003 D.I.C.E. Summit as a trailer-like tech demo. The footage depicted several horned boys, looking much like like Ico himself, on horseback through an open plain, traveling towards a gigantic colossus near the horizon (an early model of Quadratus). The horses run around its legs, while the riders try to jump from their mounts onto the beast itself. One of them is successful; he quickly climbs to the head of the colossus and makes a dramatic stab at a patch of fur. A black cloud billows from the giant, and it falls down dead. Victorious, the boys ride off into the distance.

[edit] Notes

  • While three songs from the final soundtrack can be heard in the trailer, these were not present in the original pilot movie used to pitch the game to Sony Japan.
