Ico (character)

Ico stands on a short pillar, overlooking another section of the castle.

Ico is the central character of the game Ico. Born with a pair of horns jutting from his head, he is sent to a remote castle by a handful of masked horsemen, in the hopes that it will spare his village from misfortune. He is locked in a casket, but it breaks open on the floor as soon as the guards leave the castle. Ico must work together with Yorda to escape the confines of the fortress.

He is cheerful, patient, and quite loyal, returning to the castle to rescue Yorda even after being given a final opportunity to leave without her. The only time he shows true anger is when the Queen threatens his newfound friend; this exchange results in the Shadow Queen's demise, the destruction of the Castle, and the loss of both Ico's horns.

If the number of coffins is correct, Ico is the 52nd descendant of Wander, the first cursed child to ever be (re)born. Horned children are said to be birthed once a generation; if a generation is considered to be around 100 years, this would mean some five thousand years separate the protagonists of the two games. The atonement Lord Emon speaks of takes five millennia to come about, and all because of one faulty sarcophagus.

Ico is voiced by Kazuhiro Shindou.
